Proton e-MAS 7 Selected as ASEAN 2025 Official Car

The Proton e-MAS 7 has been chosen as the official car for ASEAN 2025, which Malaysia will host next year, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

This marks an important milestone as the e-MAS 7 is Malaysia’s first electric car. Anwar explained that the choice reflects Malaysia's efforts to lead in reducing carbon emissions and shows the progress made in the country’s automotive industry. It’s a way to highlight Malaysia’s commitment to sustainability and innovation to other ASEAN nations.

On Monday, Proton unveiled its first electric vehicle (EV), marking a significant step for the company as it aims to promote EV and hybrid adoption in Malaysia while strengthening its position in the global supply chain.

Proton, a Malaysian company, is primarily owned by DRB-HICOM, with the remaining 49.9% held by China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, a key player in the automotive industry. This partnership underlines Proton’s ambition to integrate advanced technology and expand its market presence both locally and internationally.

By 2030, electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids are expected to account for 5% of all new car sales in Malaysia. Recent reports show a 112% growth in EV sales during the first half of this year, reflecting a strong shift towards greener transportation.

During the launch event, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim shared his vision of seeing the e-MAS 7 produced locally in the future, with more Malaysian businesses actively participating in the EV manufacturing industry.

The selection of the e-MAS 7 as the official vehicle for ASEAN 2025 not only symbolizes Malaysia’s growing prominence in the electric vehicle sector but also paves the way for greater collaboration within ASEAN nations to accelerate sustainable development and technological innovation. This milestone reflects Malaysia’s readiness to embrace a greener future while fostering economic growth and industrial competitiveness on a global scale.
