Next-Gen Proton Saga Teased as EV Factory Opens in Tanjung Malim

Proton has officially opened its new Electric Vehicle (EV) Production Factory in Tanjung Malim, Perak, setting a historic milestone as Malaysia’s first dedicated EV assembly line. The new facility will soon begin producing the e.MAS 7 crossover and the e.MAS 5 hatchback, marking a strong step into the electric mobility segment.

However, the highlight of the day wasn’t just about EVs. Guests, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Geely Group founder Li Shufu, were treated to a special video presentation previewing the next-generation Proton Saga.

From what was shown, the upcoming Saga is set to bring a more refined and modern design, with Proton aiming to position its compact sedan on a more premium level. While the model continues to use the AMA platform, Proton revealed that it has been heavily revised to accommodate new technologies and better performance.

One of the key upgrades comes in the form of a brand-new electrical and electronics (E&E) system, opening the door for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Confirmed features include Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and Blind Spot Detection (BSD), with the likelihood of Forward Collision Warning (FCW) being offered as well. This marks a major leap in safety compared to the current Saga.

Under the hood, the sedan will carry a new 1.5-litre engine. While Proton has not shared full details, industry talk suggests a 4-cylinder naturally aspirated unit, possibly linked to the 1.5-litre turbo engine used in the Proton X50 facelift.

Though Proton has yet to reveal variants, pricing, or the official launch date, anticipation is building as the new Saga is expected to debut in Q4 2025.
