Malaysia Launches Teksi Madani Programme with New Proton S70 Taxi

The Malaysian government has officially introduced the Teksi Madani programme, marking the beginning of a nationwide effort to modernise the country's taxi industry. The initiative was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at Dataran Merdeka, where the new Proton S70 Taxi made its public debut.

Unlike traditional Malaysian taxis, the new S70 features a modern design with LED digital displays on the front and rear windows that can switch between "Teksi" and "E-hailing", allowing the vehicle to serve both taxi and e-hailing passengers. The model also adopts the newly introduced GET JPJePlate, representing the integration of taxi and e-hailing services under a single platform.

Inside the cabin, the vehicle is equipped with a digital taximeter integrated into a display screen, which can also be used for advertising. A built-in receipt printer is included to improve convenience for both drivers and passengers.

To support taxi operators in upgrading their vehicles, the government announced a RM10 million matching grant, offering trade-in assistance of up to RM4,000 per vehicle through contributions from both Proton and the government. Drivers will also benefit from easier financing options, priority PUSPAKOM inspections, and the flexibility to use the vehicle for personal travel.

The new Proton S70 Taxi will also enjoy sales tax and excise duty exemptions, making it more affordable for operators. The estimated selling price is around RM64,500 (on-the-road, excluding insurance).

The government also confirmed that the long-standing taxi permit system will be reformed, with permits to be issued directly to taxi drivers and operators, replacing the previous leasing-based approach.

The Teksi Madani programme is expected to enhance the quality, efficiency, and competitiveness of Malaysia's taxi industry while supporting its transition towards a more modern public transport ecosystem.
